Virginia is named in honor of Diana the Roman goddess of hunting and wild animal, Jamestown is an English colony that was established in 1607, was the first permanent English settlement. The colony did not prosper and Jamestown was a disaster. Finally, Virginia’s triumph was achieved in 1620 after tobacco was introduced by John Rolfe as a cash crop.
