Appalachian Trail – Virginia, one of the thirteen colonies that were the first state of the United States, is located in the southeastern region of the nation. It is bordered by Maryland and District of Columbia to north and northeast, North Carolina and Tennessee respectively to the south and West Virginia to southwest and west. Virginia’s first borders were West Virginia. West Virginia was added to the Union in 1863. The boundary of the state along with the District of Columbia was never established.
