It is bordered by Maryland, the District of Columbia, to north and northeast, and by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south and east. Kentucky and West Virginia are located to the southwest and west. Virginia’s original borders included West Virginia. West Virginia was added to the Union in 1863. The state has yet to decide on the state’s boundary that extends to the District of Columbia.

Virginia is the name derived from the Roman goddess of hunting and wild animals, Diana. Jamestown America’s first permanent English settlement, was founded by colonists from England in 1607. Jamestown was a disaster, and the colony struggled for years to survive. Finally, Virginia was established in 1620 by John Rolfe who introduced tobacco as a cash crop.
