Virginia is named after Diana who was the Roman goddess who was responsible for hunting and wild animals. Jamestown was established by English colonists in 1607. It was the first ever permanent English settlement. Jamestown was a complete failure and the colony struggled for years to make it through. Finally in 1620 John Rolfe introduced tobacco as an economic crop, and Virginia was a huge success.
